The British television nominations have been announced, and they prove that some of the most original and creative work being done in the UK can be seen on the small screen.

Drama Serial

Most of these single dramas and short serials are lavish, expensive productions that would have been devised with a BAFTA end-game to provide added value for money. Still, they deal with a wide range of issues and tackle them succesfully. In the drama serial category, we meet Iraq servicemen in 'Occupation', wartime Jamaican immigrants in 'Small Island', a female ex-con in 'Unforgiven' and corrupt 1970's policemen in 'Red Riding'.

The competition really seems to be between 'Occupation' and 'Red Riding', as they are the somewhat weightier dramas. The former was widely praised for bringing the realities of life in Basra for service personel and civilians to a mainstream audience, and the latter was a complex, multi-layered look at the various people involved in the hunt for a serial killer. However, it seems that 'Red Riding' will triumph in the end.
