The front page of the Topeka Capital-Journal Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, described the fate of several thieves who decided to commit murder during a robbery. A witness, another thief, said he had been looking inside people’s houses, deciding which ones to rob. According to Proverbs 1:19, “Gain “takes away the life of its owners,” and this was certainly the case for these incarcerated individuals.
The “love of money is the root of all evil,” the Bible teaches in I Timothy 6:10. Instead of loving money, Paul exhorts Timothy to “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience (and) gentleness.” He writes not to “trust in uncertain riches,” but in God, “who gives us richly all things to enjoy,” according to verse 17. The Book of Proverbs contains repeated occurrences of this same message.
The Bible Teaches Trust in God, Not Money
The Bible teaches in Proverbs 3:13-18 that wisdom is the pathway to riches and honor. At the same time, it teaches that wisdom is superior to silver, gold and rubies. The issue seems to be one of priorities, yet the distinction can be subtle. However, studying the teaching about riches in the book of Proverbs should clear up any confusion.
